Investment Opportunities in Angola

Angola is a country in central-sub-Saharan Africa with a population of 37 million people. The country has rich and fertile farmland, diamonds, gold, copper, and oil. Angola is the 8th largest economy in Africa with a nominal GDP sits at $80 billion with an annual growth rate of 4.4%. Since independence, Angola’s economy has relied mainly on its petroleum and diamond industries, which make up about 60% of its GDP; The petroleum industry alone makes up about 90% of the country’s exports and 30% of its GDP(1). Producing 1.7 million barrels of oil every day, Angola’s bustling oil industry economy has attracted and fostered productive partnerships with China, India, France, and The Netherlands(2).

While petroleum is Angola’s largest industry by a far margin, the country holds other underdeveloped industries in the country that have the potential to become just as productive.

Before independence in 1975, Angola was a major exporter of bananas, coffee, and sisal, being known as a breadbasket for many neighboring countries. Much of Angola’s farmland was destroyed during their three-decade-long civil war, putting an end to their reputation as a major agricultural export. Today there are about 35 million hectares of arable land in Angola, and of that only 3% has been cultivated(3). This land has the potential to develop the agricultural sector of the country significantly, especially with the help of large scale mechanized farming.
