Investment Opportunities in Liberia

Liberia sits in West Africa with a total population of 5.6 million people as of 2024. With a nominal GDP of $5 billion and an excellent growth rate of 5.5%, the country’s economy relies primarily on rubber, diamonds, gold, and iron. While rubber is Liberia’s biggest export making about 65% of its total exports nationwide, the country holds other untapped resources which have the potential to be harnessed and converted into massive industries (1).

Explorations of Liberia’s offshore basins are currently taking place, where there is high potential for discovery of commercial oil. The country’s oil industry is currently in an early stage, only exporting crude petroleum which makes about $2.8 million a year (2). With these new potential discoveries, the industry is certain to grow exponentially in the coming years.

Massive deposits of lithium, cobalt and other critical minerals and rare earth elements were recently discovered in Liberia, with an estimated worth of about $3 billion(3). Lithium and cobalt in particular are critical metals, essential in the the production of many electronic products such as batteries, mobile devices, and EVs. The markets for lithium and cobalt alone are $26 billion and $13 billion respectively, having access to these resources will foster a significant amount of economic growth in Liberia.

Liberia’s economy is currently at a turning point. Having begun the transition from being an exporter raw materials to minerals has heightened the interest of many investors in 2025.
