The country’s total population sits at around 63.1 million people as of 2025, being the most 25th largest country in the world and the 24th most populous country in the world (1). South Africa also holds the biggest economy in Africa with a nominal GDP of about $400 billion, the biggest contributors to that number being the country’s prosperous mining, agriculture, and manufacturing industries (2). The World Bank has classified South Africa as an upper-middle-income economy, and a newly industrialized country. The countries economy is mixed, having a relatively high GPD per capita compared to other sub-Saharan countries ($6,253.37 as of 2024).
South Africa’s is also home to some of the largest and famous big game reserves in the world. The Kruger National Park alone, South Africa’s biggest reserve, is almost 5 million acres in area.
